There is a sentence like this:a cliff that unfortunately happened to lie hard by the road leading from Trurl's place to the nearest train station.
What does the 'hard by' in this sentence means? many thanks.

very close to; right beside
The cliff is exactly at the edge of the road.
This is a rare usage.
