ensue

Post by Clay »

Hi All,

I am currently having a dispute with a colleague with regards to the following statement:
"A battle ensues within!"
Now, in my mind, i think ensues is not being correctly used in this statement. I could understand a battle rages within, but ensues? Really?

So, my question is this: Who is right?

Thanks

'Fraid you're gonna lose in your dispute.

There's nothing wrong with "ensues" (meaning "begins" or "results" or "follows [from some previous event/situation]").

I haven't heard of "ensues" being used to mean begins, but if so i shall have to admit defeat.

Thank you
