ensue

Hi All,
I am currently having a dispute with a colleague with regards to the following statement:
"A battle ensues within!"
Now, in my mind, i think ensues is not being correctly used in this statement. I could understand a battle rages within, but ensues? Really?
So, my question is this: Who is right?
Thanks
