Ivy Eyes Editing: Writing an MBA Admissions Essay

Hello everyone,

We realize the English Club community draws many different types of users; however, we'd like to provide insight into various, specific admissions processes over the next few weeks. Let's begin with the MBA admissions essay!

MBA admissions essays present a significant challenge to most applicants. Take the following standard question, for example:

Describe your short-term and long-term career goals. What is your motivation for pursuing an MBA now and how will XXX MBA Program help you to achieve your goals? (750 words)

MBA applicants are getting younger. At most top MBA programs, the median age for accepted applicants is between 26-29, and this range continues to drop. With only several years in the workforce, how can candidates craft a well-articulated, vivid long-term career path?

We encourage prospective MBAs to distill exactly what interests them in their specific industry. Ask yourself the most difficult, targeted questions. What interests you in movies or digital media? Are you drawn to content development, international distribution, marketing, or strategy? Whose career within the industry most appeals to you? Choosing role models and breaking down your interests will help most candidates (particularly younger applicants) to think about these long-term goals more concretely. Marketing your successes and positioning your experience are crucial!

The irony, of course, is that many applicants will shift their interests once they enter a rigorous MBA program. A transformative summer internship may cause others to rethink their goals. However, in the context of the admissions essay, it is important to paint a concrete, persuasive portrait of what your career *might* be based on your experience to date, and how your experience + an MBA degree will help get you there.
