Ivy Eyes Editing: Admissions Essay Tip #1

Postby IvyEyesEditing » Thu Aug 13, 2009 6:59 pm

Hello everyone!

Applicants frequently ask us about how to craft a compelling introductory paragraph. There are no special 'gimmicks' for an effective introduction, and style may vary according to individual. However, we would like to provide a few broad considerations for developing a captivating introduction:

-Show rather than tell. Avoid broad generalizations and 'laundry lists' of accomplishments or experiences. Reflect more deeply on your achievements or the situation you are addressing.
-Immerse your reader in a given situation, rather than retelling a story as a passive participant.
-ALWAYS avoid direct restatements of the prompt, e.g. 'My most substantial accomplishment is...' These restatements detract from the sophistication and organic quality of your prose.
-Set the stage and paint a picture that is anchored by concrete, vivid detail.

These broad tips really cover admissions essays at all levels. Of course, 'style' and 'purpose' for admissions essays varies according to program level--college vs MBA vs medical school vs law school. (Typically, undergraduate/college admissions essays have a more creative slant, while MBA essays should always be driven by career strategy and goals).

Regardless, crafting an effective, compelling introductory paragraph can help to win your reader's attention from the moment they begin reading your essay.

We'll be back with more tips--but, we thought the introduction would be a great place to start!

All best,
Paul
