My passion for computer dates back to when I received my first computer as a gift from my parents in high school. Ever since then I have been fascinated by the potential of computers and my overriding ambition has been to become an ICT expert in future. In order to achieve my desire, I followed a 5 year degree program in Engineer of Information Technology at University of A, one of the best universities for technology in Viet Nam. During my undergraduate years, I acquired a comprehensive knowledge in mathematics and data communication, and maintained a high level of performance throughout the program. Among all subjects, the courses related to communications and computer networks were particularly appealed me by the ideal that it could “flatten” the world and put people in touch without depending on their geographical locations. I received the bachelor degree in 200x with excellent grade and GPA … out of 10. My thesis, “….”, was one branch of a project supported by the government. In this project, my work focused mainly on solving theoretical problems of techniques to synchronize multiple data streams and building an interactive learning system over distributed multimedia network. After nearly 09 months of hard work, the result of the project was approved by the Government Checking Committee and had been applied to build tele-learning system in many organizations since then. This project laid the foundation for my research career by giving me the exposure of scientific research skills and team coordination.

In addition to my educational background, I have gained a great deal of experience in diverse working environments. Throughout my professional career, I have always held highly responsible positions, from software team leader in a private company to the senior engineer in a big state-owned corporation and the Product Manager in a multi-national ICT corporation. By participating in various profession projects mainly in the area of communications and computer networks, I have been able to apply my knowledge gained from university into practice. It helped a lot in broadening my professional knowledge, acquiring valuable research experience together with outstanding leadership and management skills.

While my current profession has helped me develop a thorough insight into project handling, the industry environment that I am currently in cannot support my desire for research. I possess industry-hardened skills in communications and computer networks, but in order to become an expert in the field, I must build on these to achieve my goal of undertaking cutting-edge research in advanced computing, with specific reference to communications. Besides, being a responsible citizen of a developing country, I understand that the advancement of modern technology in Viet Nam still lags behind in many aspects. I am keen to contribute to the efforts of narrowing the gap between Viet Nam and rest of the world in respect of information and communications technology. All these objectives demand that I need better training than what is currently available in my home country. Fortunately, I found Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering program at University of xxx which is well aligned with my academic desires and aspirations. Your graduate program with its reputation of high quality education standards, distinguished faculty members and state-of-the-art facilities provides students with the perfect studying environment. I consider this the key to the successful completion of my graduate study. Further, the program offered by an international university like University of xxx would help me broaden my horizons. By meeting and interacting with students and professors from all over the world, I can easily build up my own collaborative network and knowledge base, which will be very useful in my future endeavors.

The master program is regarded as a valuable preparation for me to follow a PhD level on specific research area in communications and computer networks in future. After the completion of my graduate study, I am going back to Viet Nam to dedicate myself to the ICT field. It is likely that I will work as a lecturer or a researcher at a top university. However, I do not want to be bound exclusively to academic work. In recent years, although the ICT industry in Viet Nam has been expanding, much of the work just requires low levels of skill such as equipment assembly, software outsourcing and so forth. Instead of researching and producing by ourselves, Vietnamese companies still prefer to use existing knowledge and intellectual products from overseas. That is not sustainable development. On the other hand, while working in a multi-national ICT corporation, I have realized that if being trained and worked in the appropriate environment, we are fully able to accomplish the high-skilled, intellectual work which we used to think we could not. Therefore, I have been intrigued by the idea of establishing a research-oriented organization which will gather talented specialists engaging in R&D activities in the field of communications and computer networks. The organization aims to introduce high quality consultancy services to Vietnamese enterprises or state agencies, and thereby it will help promote the use of Vietnamese intellectual products. Additionally, this organization will be the place where I and my colleagues can exchange knowledge and learn from each other. I believe that the exposure and training I would receive from this proposed program at your esteemed university would equip me with confidence and skills to achieve this difficult task.
