Our African Origins

Postby Josef » Fri Apr 15, 2005 4:50 pm

I believe that is correct, Violet. I remember seeing an interesting BBC documentary which explained that humans first evolved in what is now called Africa. About 40,000 years ago (I think it was 40,000), they started migrating across the Arabian Peninsula into Central Asia and then down south towards India and East towards China and SE Asia. A few hardy ones made it up into NE Russia and across to Alaska (during an ice-age when the sea-level went down). They then populated North and South America. Obviously this all happened slowly over thousands and tens of thousands of years. About 30,000 years ago, humans from Central Asia moved west and entered what is now Europe (I think they were blocked by ice and snow before that). About 500 years ago some of the humans from Europe made it across the Atlantic and supplanted the existing population in North America. So we are all African really. This was established through DNA testing.
This is my recollection of a documentary. If any of it is wrong, please correct me.

Not if Addam and Hawwa aka Adam and Eve resided in Africa. ;)

Well, I'm always curious about this question: How did the environment change our appearances in such an unbelievable way?
See, people in different places are so different looking! 40,000 years maybe very long to one's life, but it's only a short moment in the life of human being......

Evolution, it's the simplest answer. We've been evolving. If not, we would have been like we were back in thousands of years ago.

Yeah, I cannot bring myself to believe in the whole Adam and Eve/Garden of Eden story. Evolution seems to be the next most logical explanation! But I am open to more bids!
