Got Asian?

This thread provides some information about Asia/Asians that you have or have not heard before.

"The following is a list of ethnic slurs, also known as ethnophaulisms, that are, or have been, used to refer to members of a given ethnicity (or, in some cases, nationality, region, or religion) in a derogatory or pejorative manner. The term is listed, followed by its primary user(s) and a definition.

Terms on this list vary greatly in offensiveness. Many are taboo. Some are used more widely than might be imagined based on their "definition"; for example, Boatie can be used to refer to any Vietnamese person, a form of metonymy. The key here is that the person using the slur cares so little about the target, that the person's actual background is irrelevant. The motivation for using an ethnic slur is often racism or bigotry.

It is not uncommon for minority groups to adopt an originally disparaging term and use it of themselves, as an act of self-assertion. However, they may be extremely offended if it is used by others. Nigger is an extreme example."

FRESH OFF THE BOAT???? :?
Fresh off the boat (often abbreviated as F.O.B., FOB or freshie) is a derogatory slang phrase applied to people of foreign nationality, who have arrived in an English-speaking nation as tourists or, most commonly, as work permit applicants. The term is commonly applied to Asians in the United States and Canada, and to Pacific Islanders in New Zealand and Australia. It was originally applied to European immigrants who had just stepped off of a ship.

The term implies that the person has not yet assimilated to the common regional culture, language, and behavior. FOBs can be easily identified by their fashion, behavior towards others, and their accents. The characteristics of FOBs are magnified if they tend to co-habitate in the same cities. A telling characteristic of FOBs is their tendency to form close social cliques that are closed to those of other nationalities.

The term is used not only by whites, but also by Asians born or raised in the host country to distinguish themselves. Various slang terms, such as ABC (American-born Chinese) or ABCD (American-Born Confused Desi), exist to contrast these groups.

Derivative adjective forms of FOB include fobby, fobbish and fobulous, a portmanteau of fob and fabulous.

Similar phrases are "Just off the Farm" or "Just come in from the Bush/Jungle/Mountains/Backblocks".

A more modern twist to this term is "J.O.J.", meaning "just off the jet".

Yellow Peril???? :?
"Yellow Peril was a phrase that originated in the late 19th century with greater immigration of Chinese and Japanese laborers to various Western countries, notably the United States. The phrase "yellow peril" was common in the newspapers owned by William Randolph Hearst. The variation "yellow terror" was also used.........."

Orientalism???? :?
"Orientalism is the study of Near and Far Eastern societies and cultures, by Westerners. Like the term "Orient" itself it employs a Latin term Oriens referring simply to the rising of the sun, to imply "the East" in the most general sense. Unless one is travelling on the Orient Express, the "Orient" is a vague destination. "Orient" and "Oriental" have been used in English to refer to both Near and Far Eastern countries. Similar terms are the French-derived "Levant" and "Anatolia," from the Greek anatole, two further locutions for the direction in which the sun rises......."

Bananas???? :?
"Banana is a mildly pejorative term used to describe people who are "white" (Western) on the inside and "yellow" (of east Asia) on the outside. It is usually used to refer to people of east Asian origin living in Western countries (e.g. Asian Americans )........"

The acronym FOB can be applied to all immigrants, not just Asians. I was and still am a FOB. Although it carries a derogatory meaning, I wield it without conscience because I define it with my own meaning. ;)

I was once a banana but was promoted not too long ago. Now I am a mango.

According to essie, LOP stands for Long Off the Plane.
