Odd agreement of a tense

Dear teacher,

The festival continues in 15 venues around the city, lasting through Sept. 14, and the Y's celebrations will stretch throughout its entire 2004-5 season.
As a wide variety of events will convey, the story of American Jews became a tale of the passage from the periphery to the center, from immigrant yearning to mainstream achievement.


Q : I think

As a wide variety of events conveyed, the story of American Jews became a tale of the passage from the periphery to the center, from immigrant yearning to mainstream achievement.

OR

As a wide variety of events will convey, the story of American Jews will become a tale of the passage from the periphery to the center, from immigrant yearning to mainstream achievement.

is correct sentence. What do you think?

I feel that the original sentence is correct, if long-winded.

The events are in the future. The story that the events will convey is in the past.

Your other two sentences are not really possible.

Do you mean "as" functions as "a relative noun"?

As a wide variety of events will convey, the story of American Jews....

=> the story of American Jews, as a wide variety of events will convey,.....

=> the story of American Jews, which a wide variety of events will convey,.....

'As' is a sentential relative pronoun (antecedent: main clause "the story...achievement"), a topic recently discussed in this forum at some length.

As Josef says, the original sentence is correct as written.
