Dear teacher,

Would you please tell me if my answers are correct?

List 5:

21 ………… smoke hung over the industrial town. = X / a cloud of / a pall of

22 It is refreshing to find such an unspoilt …… countryside. I hope ……will be preserved. = a) X / stretch of b) it

23 A great ……of drudgery had been done away with through labour saving devices. = deal (?)

(what's the meaning of the sentence?)

24 ………… rank vegetation grew at the water’s edge. = X / ?

25 I have not done ……research into the matter. = any

26 There is a fair ………… of wisdom in that philosophy. = air of (?)

22a. 'Stretch of' - not X.

23. Yes, 'deal of'. It means that machines save us from a lot of arduous labour. ('Do away with' means 'get rid of/abolish'.)

24. Nothing needed.

26. Would suggest 'amount of'.
