Do you eat for hunger or for comfort?

Post by Shazzam »

Do you eat because you are hungry? Or do you eat because you need comfort (depressed, angry, sad, bored, tired etc).

Yes or No.

Yeah, I eat because I'm hungry and I eat when I feel sad. Thank God I'm not usually sad.

I have heard that people eat sweet stuff when they're depressing. I wonder if it's true or not. :?

I spend alot of time around young teens and I have noticed that they do most of their (serious) eating in front of the television. They aren't concentrating on what or how much they are eating they are just eating!

You must eat sometimes for pleasure. What about your favorite fruit; or a piece of chocolate or an icecream?

eating itself is pleasurable that it doesn't really mean to me whether I eat because I'm really hungry or because I just want to have a snack... both ways eating is good. unless of cours you eat too much. I think no one sane would like to look like a pear...

I did not say "never".

And eating healthy for hunger is not uncompatible with eating with pleasure (and not with eating ecologically).

I think most people feel really happy when they eat something they like. If you didn't you would never eat at all. Nothing wrong with enjoying your food I reckon. You are right as long as you don't over do it you can pretty much eat what you want; when you want. :)

I think alot of people eat junk when they are stressed; because it is easy to access. Imagine if apples and oranges were available from vending machines instead of mars bars and candy people.

Yes, they are just things you want not things you need. You can live well without all these things.

I can live without smoking and without a tv. But that's about it. Other stuff on your list is necessary to survive!

We all need to survive I totally agree. The thing is to survive we we all just eat vegetables, fruit, water and maybe a little bit of meat (or something to substitute it). But lets face it we all need some sort of comfort food. Whether it be chips, cake, chocolate etc. something that we get a quick burst of happiness from.

The thing is do we eat this stuff (chips etc) because we are upset, unhappy, happy etc.

How do we judge our feelings when we eat this sort of comfort food?

It's just the opposite, people use eating to cover their feelings of sadness, loneliness... and similar feelings...
You can help me with my English by telling me my mistakes in a private message. Thanks :)

I have just started a journal to try and determine what triggers appetite. Things like advertising, inactivity, smell etc. It is amazing how easily hunger can be triggered from watching television advertising (especially at night). When you write down the triggers you would be amazed. I'm going to keep this experiment going for another couple of weeks; but I have already had some really interesting insights into what triggers my eating binges. Mine seems to be boredom. If i'm busy I don't give it a second thought until my tummy yells at me. They are the sorts of triggers you should listen to. If i'm watching television and an add comes on with pizza I will feel hungry.
