I don't know if I am right, but this is what I think:

Latino and Hispanic mean almost the same.

Chicano means from Mexico.

Please Elba or other LATIN members correct me :D

At USA Latino and Hispanic is all the people who was born at any country of Latinamerica or Caribe.

Chicano, was in the 60´s the despective expression to inmigrants from Latinamerica or Caribe, but with the years Chicanos are people whose racial origen is Latinamerica or Caribe, even if the don´t were born in those countries.

I mean chicanos could be born at USA, but they parents are from Latinamerica.

Now the meaning is to much complete and refer to all the culture of that people whose origen is in any of those countries.

Then at USA Chicanos has the most diverses expressions of a particular culture. There are painters, writters, politicians and too much people who fight in order the government of USA respect the rights of that social group.

The fight of Chicanos to be recognized as citizens of USA, with rights, but with different cultural origen, began in the 1960. Do you remember the theather play "Love with out barriers"? that is and example of the social problems that Chicanos had (racial problems) and the reazon they began the fight.

Chicano movies has very good expression of that problems. you could see, Tikay, the movie The salt of the heat (1959), and another like Zoot Suit.

I hope I could be enough explicit in my answer.
The word Chicano is a derivation of Mexicano, because "Greengoes" (americans) didn´t pronounce Mexicano, then they used to say Chicano.

Tika, Dixie and all interested in Chicanos,

You talk about a topic that is my passion, the Chicano cultural expressions.

I send you a link with some academic definitions. I´m not totaly agree in some aspects, but I think it could be interesting for you read what the text say.

For me Chicano is "a circunflex stress, middle mexican, middle american, but with proper identity. A man or woman in the middle of the Bravo River. He/she is throw out of the american side, but she/he is not aceppted in the mexican country. He/she only is in the middle" (propper thoughness).

Thank you Elba!
this is where i was going with my question because as i understand it there was a political/racial point to be made. I really appreciate the answer and hope others will keep explaining and adding to the thread so we can be more accurate and informed. I know somwthing about the injustices done...but not enough. I think Diego Rivera wishes he were here to explain too.
Again i am happy to know more!!!

Hello friends,

I also don't know if I'm right, but I don't think Latin and Hispanic mean the same. I think Latin is everyone who have a language and the culture based on the old Latin (or Roman) Civilization, for example, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, most of the Lantin American countries...and Hispanic is who have the language and culture based on Spain, like Mexico, Argentina, Spain, and many countries in Latin America. So, I think I'm Latin, but not Hispanic, because I'm from Brazil.

About the Chicanos I don't know what is the difference.

Best wishes,

Eduardo.

Edumelo, Spanish is a romance language too. Here the differences are more cultural and politic than geographic or gramatical.

Tika, Why Diego Rivera???????

Hi again. I was reading this topic and I found it a very interestign one. !!!!! Why did the conversation end too early??? Hey, there's too much to talk about our culture, the differences between Latin & Hispanic. Are we Latin or Hispanic???? The middle of the World call us Latin people, but the other part call us Hispanic!!!! Hispanic means that we speak the same language???? Spanish? What about Brazil? they speak portuguese, so they're Latin and not Hispanic??? But what about Spain???? Spain is in the European Continet, so Why are they called Latin and not Hispanic If it's suppose that every people from the Caribean and SouthAmrecia are called Latin???

That's the reason I was wondering u didn't continue the conversation.....

I'll be glad to get the answers.. !! Please, If you're kind you can join us to find out which Latin or Hispanic we MUST use.

Thanks!!
