FIJI COUP LOOKS LIKE IT WILL GO AHEAD!

Postby Shazzam » Tue Dec 05, 2006 3:28 am

The news in Australia is that the military coup will go ahead in Fiji unless the Prime Minister resigns. He is standing firm and has asked our Prime Minister (John Howard) to help. Mr Howard has said no as he doesn't feel that Australia should get involved. It seems like only a matter of time before the government there is overturned by the military.

I don't know too much about how all this came about (because I had my head in the books) does anyone have any of the facts?

The problem in Fiji is that a long time ago the British imported Indians into Fiji to work the sugar cane plantations. Since that time the Indians have overpopulated the country with greedy shop owners and businessmen who serve with a surly look and attitude that is quite contrary to the native Fijian way of life. Native Fijians are very open and friendly and will invite any strangers into their homes. They always have a smile and love to please people. the problem is that they have no interest in making money, so the Indians have gained control of commerce and are now influencing politics and policies that radically change the Fijian way of life to the detriment of Fijians and Fiji.

Fortunately the Indians are hopeless as soldiers and the Fijian Army is predominantly made up of Native Fijians. Hopefully the army will kick any greedy Indian politician out of office who tries to turn the paradise of Fiji into another capitalistic smog ridden money driven society!

The same thing happened in Vanuatu 10 years ago.

Thanks Danyet for the post I feel a little bit more enlightened; i suppose it is just something that I never followed before. I do remember about Vanuatu many years ago but once again at the time didn't really get involved.

The coup seems to have been effective the military at this point seems to have taken control. Australian's have been issued travel warnings which is such a shame. I hope it resolves itself soon as I know that Fijians are lovely people and rely heavily on tourism. Bali has already become a no go zone for many Australians I would hate to see the same thing happen there.
