It doesn't matter where I live. My traditional custom is almost the same as your. Young people should avoid calling old people by name. They suppose to call them uncle, aunt, Mr., Mrs. and so on. However in English, you can’t say you’re are uncle to everyone unless that person really related to you or you knew that person very well.
