Do you think you should go to University?

Postby Shazzam » Sun Feb 17, 2008 8:53 am

There is a huge push in Australia for people to undertake university courses. Some of the courses I have found that are on offer don't translate into real jobs. I am starting University next week and the course that I have decided to do will translate into a real position and enable me to open my own practice. I'm lucky.

I was wondering what do you think about University. Is it necessary? Or can you do just as well without a degree?

The Universities in Australia are very sought after and I have noticed alot of overseas students, which is great. I was just wondering why the great interest in degrees in Australia and what it ultimately does for your career? :?:

Sharon, I don't understand your question. Here, you go to universities to get a degree. I guess you can get a degree in other places in Australia as well, instead of university?

I am very happy to have gone to uni. I got my degree, made very good friends with whom I am still in contact despite living in different places, learned a lot from SOME of my professors and have a lot of fun. It was a very special time of my life. It was just great.

Thanks to my degree and other minor studies I did afterwards, I am working as an English teacher in a school in my town. This is the best job I've had so far, working full-time and enjoying every bit of it.

So I think it is important to go to university, if you've got the chance. Don't miss it!

I am graduating this year and will be attending for a master degree too. I think it is important to get a degree in order to curve out a career for myself.

Going to university is not a guarantee that people can be rich. Many rich people never go to university. Some of them are drop-outs. In my observation, most universities (and also parents) tend to push their students to get a good job in the future. They rarely encourage their students to create job opportunities. Students are molded to be an employee. They are not directed to be an entrepreneur.

I don't mean to say that going to university is useless. But my point is how we can creat job opportunities instead of searching for a job.

Sorry Dixie it was a typo i have edited it to read "without a degree"... You have to admit (I don't know in your Country) but there are some very obscure courses available at University now that don't fit into the mainstream. Of course doing a Bachelor of Education would but some courses that are made available aren't as mainstream.

Do you study laws that are in Australia or internationally? In my last semester here, I study something like laws, but not exactly law, it is called "Basics of right".
