Capitolizing "I" in a sentence

I am an Amercan citizen living and working in Germany. A colleage asked me why is "I" always capitolized in a sentence but "he, she, you ...." do not?

Could anyone help me with what I can tell my colleage? Even though I have grown up learning and writing it this way, I do not know why!!

I think it's because the word "I" consists of only one, ninth letter of the English alphabeth.
If the text was written by hand and not machine and by way of not using capitalised "I" the "i" couldn't be easy recognised in the text and the text med look less attractive.
