Hello! I was wondering what these phrases mean?

Are these referring to being independent?

Yes, they do refer to being independent.
"Pins" means "legs" or "feet" as in "You''ll have to stand on your own two feet."
"Steam" - as far as I am aware the normal expressions is "under your own steam", meaning without help from anyone else.
