Is it proper to say "He did not take classes monday"..

Hi, I am new in this forum..

In the Indian subcontinental English.. people often use expressions such as "the teacher did not take class on Monday" meaning the teacher did not come to class to teach on Monday. They also use such as "Mr. X will take Economics 101 this semester" meaning Mr. X will teach Economics 101. In America I saw "take class" is used to express when a student enrolls in a class. Is this proper? What is the proper expression?

I can only speak for British English and the following would be normal:

Professor X will take our class tomorrow. (teach) :ok:

= to lead
How many students are taking Physics this year? (study) :ok:

= to be taught in a subject
She took a degree in French. (study) :ok:

= to be taught in a subject

We would NOT say:
Two students did not take class today. (study) :nok:

Professor X will take Physics this year. (teach) :nok:

I can't be sure but I think the above is the same in AmE.

How about:

Two students did not attend class today. (study) :ok:

Two students skipped class today. (study) :ok:

Two students were missing from class today. (study) :ok:

Professor X will teach Physics this year. (teach) :ok:

In your sentence "He did not take classes monday", did-means it's past tense. So I think much better if they say "the teacher had never attended her/his classes last monday".

No. That is not necessary. The tense is ok.

The teacher did not take class on Monday. :ok:

= The teacher did not take class last Monday. :ok:
