Flew Vs Fly

Post by Brahman »

1. There have been instances where butterflies flew hundreds of kilometers in a day.

2. There have been instances where butterflies fly hundreds of kilometers in a day.

I feel that sentence 1 is correct --- "flew" is the correct verb. But I cannot explain why. Could someone help me?

'Have flown' is the most natural choice, but 'flew' would be acceptable.
