singular or plural?

Post by sumsing »

Dear teacher,

What does the following sentence ask?

Which books do you like best?

Is it asking a certain genre such as science fiction?
Or a speaker thinks that there would be some books that you like the best of all the books you read and you cannot choose one book as the best one?

Thank you for your help.

Impossible to say with such limited context.

It COULD be about genres (though why not ask "Which genres do you like the best?"), or there might be a pile of books in fron of them and he's asking which of those the other person likes most. Or it could be something else. From the context, we would know.
