adjectives ed ing

Post by liliy »

First thankyou for reply about going = gerund.

I have one more question please.

I know ed adjectives describe feelings and ing adjectives describe what something is like.

Can you show me why the two examples are not crowding and displaying

The stadium was crowded with soccer fans.
The paintings were well displayed.

Thankyou so much

Although it is true that there are many participial adjectives ending in -ed that do refer to human feelings (such as 'amazed, tired' etc.), there are many others (such as the two you cite here) that simply denote states of inanimate objects.

Common sense, or reference to a good dictionary, should generally be sufficient to distinguish the one from the other.
