on page 77 vs at page 77

Postby Rustamsher » Thu Apr 18, 2013 5:14 pm

..while taking a test in the test-book I came across the following:

Open the books at page 53 and read the text.

The preposition at drew my attention, for I was taught that the preposition on
is used with the word page, therefore I have done a little research into this problem
and found the following sentences in Practical English Usage by Michael Swan (3-rd edition).

on page 20 etc (NOT at/in)
(a) There's a mistake on page 120 (p. 432)
(b) The map is on page 32 (BUT I opened the book at page 32) (p. 74)

Mr Alan, is there a rule which explains when to use on OR at?

Thanks
