have/has

Please let me know which of the following is correct.

The couple have two sons.
OR
The couple has two sons.

Is there any nuance involved? If so, could you illustrate the contexts in which it is used with a plural verb and a singular verb? I have seen it used in both ways without being able to distinguish between them.

Many thanks..

BrE users would prefer the former, AmE users (possibly) the latter.
