There Alan, from the sentence, "Jimmy threw a pencil at Eric." I know that "Jimmy is the subject and Eric is the object.
What is "a pencil"?
I need to explain to my students.
Thanks.

Re: Subject and Object
Not quite, I'm afraid.
'Pencil' is the direct object. 'Eric' is simply a prepositional object.
