Adjective or adverb?

Post by Rustamsher »

Hi Mr Alan Bunyan,

We used to live close to a railway line. Every time a train went past, the whole house
would shake.

Why is close used after the verb? Should the adverb (closely --> in this case) not be used ?

Thanks..

'Close to' is a fixed phrasal preposition equivalent to 'near'. (It has nothing to do with adjectives vs. adverbs.)
