The Modern Institute is an NGO that promotes social integration through language teaching and training. We mainly run project-funded work for disadvantaged groups but also run commercial courses to help fund our project work.

The Modern institute is an NGO that promotes social integration through language teaching and training. It was set up by a Canadian, Thomas Topham and a Brit, David Read, who have over 30 years experience between them as teachers and teacher trainers.

The main goal of the organisation is to run grant-funded training courses for English teachers from disadvantaged groups and underserved communities. We also offer specialised commercial courses for businesses and NGOs in order to help fund our project work. For previous organisations in Bulgaria we have run teacher training courses for Roma teachers of English and English teachers from smaller communities. We have also run courses in civic English for groups of mayors from all over Bulgaria.

The Modern Institute also offers the SIT TESOL Certificate Course, an internationally-recognised intensive training course that prepares individuals to be teachers of English to speakers of other languages. The course is run over 4 weeks and provides the trainee teacher with a solid grounding in communicative methodology and equips them with the skills they need when they start to work as a teacher either in their own country or abroad.
