Virginia International University offers programs at the certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and graduate levels in the fields of business, health care and computer science, as well as International Communication programs including ESL and TESOL.
VIU’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program is a semester-based program that offers instruction at four proficiency levels, from elementary to college
preparatory. Our affordable four-level ESL program serves adult learners from as many as 50 countries. The primary purpose of this intensive program is to prepare students
for academic and professional work. The program offers both full-time and part-time study, including a TOEFL iBT preparatory course. The schedule also includes a variety of content-based ESL electives to appeal to a wide range of
interests. VIU’s ESL program is a daytime, weekday program with highly qualified and experienced instructors as most have their master’s degree in English as a Second Language, a foreign language, linguistics, or a related field. Many have spent considerable time overseas and are fluent in one or more foreign languages. Classes are small, with fewer than 15 students in most classes; therefore, each student can expect personal attention and help from their teachers. Full-time ESL students enjoy 20 hours of classroom instruction per week. Most of our students come to VIU to learn English as a step toward academic work
or career development, and some qualify to combine ESL and academic instruction. Many graduates of VIU’s ESL program move into our academic programs, including certificates, undergraduate, and graduate programs in business and computer science.
