Eastern Michigan University: Education First! We offer MA-TESOL, Graduate and Undergraduate K-12 Teacher Certification, and a full range of ESL courses for university credit.
The EMU TESOL program has been preparing TESOL professionals for over 25 years. Our graduates work in TESL, TEFL, and ESOL worldwide. Our teacher education focus means that professors are not linguists or theorists, but teacher-development specialists. All of our professors teach ESL, undergraduate TESOL, MA-TESOL, and TESOL for K-12 certification. We are an NCATE accredited program, with courses designed to meet the Standards for Teacher Preparation Programs published by Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL). Our students receive personal attention in small classes. ESL students at EMU are fully admitted to the university, and receive University credit for their ESL classes that can be applied to their degree. Undergraduates who wish to teach abroad can add our TESOL Minor to any major. Our Graduate Endorsement candidates [and, starting in Fall 2008, undergraduate K-12 Education Majors from any focus - e.g., Language Arts, History, Elementary Education] can take our TESOL Minor to become certified to teach K-12 ESL in the state of Michigan. Our MA-TESOL students are required to complete a practical teaching experience focused either on University EAP or on entrepreneurial Adult ESP. Competitive graduate assistantships are available for students tutoring ESL, working with TESOL faculty, or working with other language professors. Our TESOL students are encouraged to participate in professional organizations. Some travel grants are available.
