Welcome to ESL Progress

Dear
EnglishClub.com Member,

Welcome to ESL Progress! for January 2009. May I wish you a Happy New Year and successful 2009! And as the Lunar New Year comes early this year (in January), let me wish you a Happy Lunar New Year too! In this edition Daniel Emmerson asks for your help with the Learning English Video Project. Another thing you can do is start your own page on English Club (details below). You'll also find the latest EC Site of the Month Award, and a lesson on different ways to say "hello" in English. You can also take part in our Talking Point Discussion--on the curious subject of the rat (last month it was pirates!). Test yourself too with Quick Quiz. As always there is the latest news; and lesson plan, jobs and business opportunities for teachers and schools.

Wishing you all a very successful 2009!

Happy Progress!

Video Test Audience Wanted!

Daniel Emmerson writes:

The Learning English Video Project is entering one of the most important stages of production and we are offering YOU the chance to take part!

I have been editing each of the films for the last few weeks and should be coming to the closing stages of production at the end of January.

I am looking for 25 volunteers to be part of the test audience panel! Each video (England, USA, Spain, Morocco, Romania) needs to be seen by five people so that we can get some feedback on the films before the series is released in April 2009!

This is a very exciting part of the project and I would be grateful for your help. However, due to a huge amount of interest, I need you to fill out a short application telling me why you would like to be a part of the test audience.

For more information and a chance to be a part of the test audience, please click on the link below:

Rats: Pets or Pests?

Whether you think rats are lovely furry creatures which make good pets or whether you think they are revolting vermin, you have to admire them: they are excellent survivors.

Talking Point: Rats
An unusual topic for a lesson, but nevertheless, a global issue. Topic-related phrases and idiomatic expressions are introduced in a gap-fill exercise and practised in conversation. Stimulating quizzes expand the students' knowledge of rats in general. Discussion questions include: "How much of the world's food crop do rats damage each year? Would you like to get out of the rat race?"

Each Talking Point worksheet is available for download as a PDF file that you can view in the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. Each worksheet can be easily printed and is freely photocopiable.
