give it a shot | give it a whirl Informal

Meaning: If you give something a shot, or give it a whirl, you try doing something for the first time, usually for fun.

For example:

  • I've never tried playing golf, but I'd like to give it a shot.

  • Mark asked some guys riding skateboards if he could borrow one and give it a whirl.
