Meaning: to result in the intended outcome

Synonym: succeed

For example:

  • come off Sarah's scheme to get rich quick by marrying a rich man didn't come off. After marrying a guy from Saudi Arabia, she found out he was actually very poor.

  • come off Barry's plan to make millions by writing a popular novel didn't come off because he wasn't a very good writer.

Note: Most often used in negative contexts, such as "The plan didn't come off."
