He that complies against his will, is of his own opinion still

Meaning: If you force someone to do something or agree with something, it doesn't mean that they really agree.

Note: comply (verb): to act as requested or required | against one's will: without agreement | opinion (noun): view or judgement about something

Origin: This saying comes from the satirical poem Hudibras by Samuel Butler (1612-80):

He that complies against his Will,
Is of his own Opinion still;
Which he may adhere to, yet disown,
For Reasons to himself best known.
