Meaning

an offensive, derogatory term for a person whose skin colour is not white

For example

  • I was very embarrassed when my grandfather asked my wife, "What part of the empire do those wogs next door come from?"

  • After my daughter told me that some of the white kids at her school had called her a wog, I went to see the school's principal.

Origin: This is a very offensive derogatory term only used by racists. It may have originated from "golliwog", meaning a soft doll with a black face and colourful clothes that was meant to resemble an African-American child.

Warning! This is very bad language. If you are a non-native speaker, you are advised not to use it. (You could cause resentment or anger if you use it inappropriately.)

Variety

This is typically used in British English but may be used in other varieties of English too.
