fruit American English Offensive

Meaning: an offensive, derogatory word for a gay man, or a male homosexual

For example:

  • Oscar was on the subway when some teenage boys sat near him, and one of them said, "Why you lookin' at us? You some sort of fruit, are ya?"

  • When I was in the U.S., I saw a sticker on the back of a car that said, "Jesus hates fruits. Kill a queer for Christ." How crazy is that?

Note: This word is offensive to most gay men, so you're advised not to use it. If you want to use an informal word to refer to a male homosexual, use the word "gay","gay man" or "gay guy" instead.

Variety: This is typically used in American English but may be used in other varieties of English too.
