Xmas

Meaning: an abbreviation of "Christmas"

For example:

  • Do you think we should write "Merry Xmas" on our cards, or would "Merry Christmas" be better?

  • We need to buy some Xmas decorations for the office.

Note: can be pronounced as either "eks-mas" or "kris-mas"

Origin: Derived from "X-Mas", a shortened form of the word "Christmas" that was first used in Europe around the sixteenth century. In Greek, Christ's name is Xristos, starting with the letter "chi", which is written as X.
