gaffer British English

Meaning: the manager, the boss

For example:

  • All the Manchester United players said they owed their success to the gaffer and the rest of the coaching staff.

  • Eh, Bobby! The gaffer wants to see you. And you'd better watch out coz he don't look too happy, neither!

Note: usually used with the definite article "the"

Variety: This slang is typically used in British English but may be used in other varieties of English too.
