Meaning: to be in a difficult situation with little chance of finding a solution

For example:

  • Johnny had a bag of cocaine in his pocket, so when the cops started searching him he knew he was up shit creek.

  • Thanks to this government, we're up shit creek! It'll take years for the economy to recover!

Note: a less offensive variation is "up the creek"

Origin: From the slang idiom "up shit creek without a paddle" which means to be in a very difficult situation with little chance of finding a solution or a way out.
