Meaning: a young professional with a high-paying job and an expensive lifestyle

For example:

  • A lot of yuppies are buying apartments in inner-city areas, so prices are going up fast.

  • There's a whole new class of yuppies emerging in fast-growing economies like those of China and India.

Origin: From "(y)oung (u)rban (p)rofessionals", or yups. Widely-used first in the 1980's.
