Instead of 'pronouns' could we use 'the'?

Could you kindly view your opinion regarding this sentence which was written by my pupil during exam?

The aunty is gardening.

Instead of 'pronouns' he used 'the' . What's your view?

With me it is all right, since the listener knows whose aunt is mentioned. Besides, just "aunty" without any article at all could also be good in this situation. "My"is absolutely unnecessary here.
Although, when one doesn't know which article should be used, a possessive pronoun is a way out.
