how to start a class?

Unread postby robabeh » Sat Dec 22, 2012 2:05 pm

Dear all

Greetings

I'm a new English teacher and was wondering in what ways I can start my speaking classes; I mean which words and expressions I can use once I enter the class, to greet students; to monitor the class and to end the discussion?

I'll highly appreciate it if you let me know your suggestions for beginner, intermediate and advanced language proficiency classes.

I would try to make your conversation with the students as natural as possible. A lesson on greetings is a great way to start the course. You can teach them common greetings, and then use these greetings for the rest of the term. The following are some suggestions.

Enter the room:
Hello everyone.
Hi. It's nice to see all of you.

Greetings:
How are you?
How’s it going?

Monitoring:
Do you have any questions?
Does anyone have any questions?

Ending the discussion:
That's all for today.
I think we'll finish there.

Closing:
See you tomorrow.
Have a nice day/weekend.

All the best!

Becki

Nice and effective. Thank you Becky. for such post. I like the way you start and i agree with that the conversation with the students must be as simple as it could be so that the students feel free to ask you and answer you something.

Teacher's behavior matters a lot in order to motivate the students.
