How safe is China?

After reading the newsweek article that talks about all the Californians and their awful experiences working as ESL Teachers in China, I'm having a hard time explaining to my folks why Im considering job offers from there. I was wondering if anyone could give me information about sketchy parts of China, as well as really good parts. Any schools to stay away from? Or good websites for that kind of information.
Its really urget, please help.
