using taekwando to teach english

Unread postby travelgriz » Tue Apr 19, 2011 11:26 am

Hi,

I am a new teacher in Korea and I have some students that really struggle with English but are amazing with Taekwando and really love it!! I want to use it in some of my lessons, but can't quite form an idea of how that would work. Does anyone have ideas??

Thanks!

Assuming they are quite low level, basically what you are talking about is TPR (Total Physical Response). The first stage is you giving them instructions like "Right leg kick" and them following them (be sure not to do the action yourself every time, so that they actually have to listen). They can then give you and each other similar instructions, and you can also write instructions on the board to practice reading. You can also tie it in with typical textbook topics like classroom vocab ("Pretend to punch the door"), comparatives and superlatives ("Who can kick the highest?") and past tenses.
