verb demand

Unread postby dragonfly9 » Mon Jun 02, 2008 10:06 pm

I tried to post this question today.
Does anyone out there know the name of this kind of verbs and the list of the verbs?
"She demanded that he return the books he borrowed from her."
The verb return is in the base form without a tense.

Hi

The name is "reporting verbs":)

(1) Verbs followed by "that"

add
admit
agree
announce
answer
argue
boast
claim
comment
complain
confirm
consider
deny
doubt
estimate
explain
fear
feel
insist
mention
observe
persuade
propose
remark
remember
repeat
reply
report
reveal
say
state
suggest
suppose
tell
think
understand
warn

(2) Verbs followed by "that" or a "to-infinitive"

decide
expect
guarantee
hope
promise
swear
threaten

(3) Verbs followed by "that" containing should
(but note that it may be omitted, leaving a subject + zero-infinitive):

advise
beg
demand
insist
prefer
propose
recommend
request
suggest

(4) Verbs followed by object + to-infinitive

advise
ask
beg
command
forbid
instruct
invite
teach
tell
warn

The use of the infinitive (to + base form) is formal. Using "should" is less formal.
Examples
‘It’s important that the lesson be funny’ - too formal.
‘It’s important that the lesson should be funny.’

"The doctor recommended (that) he should give up smoking."

"The doctor recommended (that) he give up smoking." (More formal)

Demand can be followed by infinitive too:

E.g.: "I demand to see the manager"
