Representatives from the U.S., Iran, and Iraq, met in this month to discuss the current Iraqi situation. The meeting was described as "business-like", and issues unrelated to Iraq were not addressed. While denying the accusation that they are assisting the Iraqi militia, Iranian representatives upheld their concern that the U.S. presence in Iraq is an "occupation". Iran recommended the formation of a trilateral security group in Iraq, that the U.S. agreed to consider. This is the first time in 27 years that diplomats from the U.S. and Iran have met in a formal session. The U.S. cut ties with Iran following the seizure and occupation of the US Embassy from 1979-1981, in which Iranian students held hostages.
