Writing Prompt ~ Since

Writing Prompt

Writing Prompt: The word “since” as a time marker causes some confusion for English learners. When expressing time, “since” is usually used with perfect tenses. It means from one point in the past until now. I’ve been living here since February. The word “since” is not used when expressing a duration of time. When expressing a period of time like three hours or two months, use “for” rather than “since”. I’ve been living here for three months. Review how to use “since” with perfect tenses. (Note that “since” sometimes means “because” and is not related to time.) Then demonstrate your understanding by writing a letter that tells a friend or family member how much you miss him or her.

Dear Kevin,
It has been a long time since we talked. I haven’t seen you since last Christmas! In fact, I guess I haven’t talked to you since you moved away. I miss you so much. What have you been up to? I’ve been studying really hard since January. My courses are quite tough these days. You probably don’t remember what it’s like to study. You haven’t been in school since 2005! The last time we saw each other I was feeling really lonely. I haven’t felt that way since getting a dog. My dog Ralph keeps me company. Unfortunately, he has been sick since Tuesday. It’s not like Ralph to get sick for more than a day. I hope he’s okay next week since we’re going on vacation!
