sounds

hi . In English, there are some words that have similar spelling but pronounced differently. for ex: province > has an "AH" sound pr "ah" vince opposed to, provincial > has an "Oh" sound pr "oh" vincial i have other words as well. is there a reason for this, why the "PRO-" sounds differently?? thx!
