Great Viewers!

Post by behnam »

Hi friends,

How many people view this thread at every 24 hours? Statistics show this thread is viewed 1000 times at every 24 hours! This is a great success for us, isn't it? How can we increase the number of viewers? We should motivate people to view the thread regularly, and recommend it to others. How can we motivate people? I think my new strategy; filling the blanks, which helps the English learners improve their language skills can be motivating. I hope so!

Until now, this thread has been viewed more than 290000 times. This is a big success in my opinion!

Thank you for viewing this thread.

Fluency!

Post by behnam »

Key words for fluency

Fluency is the ability to speak naturally, listen efficiently, read quickly, and write well. What does this mean?

1) Speaking naturally means NOT making everything up one word at time, but speaking in whole expressions at normal speed.

2) Listening efficiently means understanding people at the speed at which they speak. This means that when you hear the first word of an expression or the first few words of a sentence, you know how it is going to end.

3) Reading quickly means that your eye is ahead of your brain! You are able to predict what author has written.

4) Good writing is writing which expresses exactly what you want to say in natural ways which the reader will immediately understand.

All those skills depend on having a large store of words and expressions which you don't need to think about or construct every time you use English. The more collocations you know, the less you need to think! And the more fluent your English becomes.

Your Answers Are Correct!

Post by behnam »

Hi Seti,

Thank you very much for completing the sentences. Your answers are correct, but I've got some other suggestions, since some answers are replaceable. For example, 'to show your anger' can be replaced by 'to express your anger' in many cases. However, 'to express something' means to tell or show what you are feeling or thinking by using words, looks, or actions, whereas 'to show something' means to let someone see something. There are slightly different.

In order to practise(actually, when I am writing a sentence, I am practising English skills.) using those collocations, I am rewriting the sentences.

1) Drivers are blocking the motorway to express their anger over high fuel costs.
2) The player couldn't control his anger and shouted at the referee.
3) The destruction of the mosque has aroused throughout the Muslim world.
4) I still feel a lot of anger towards my father, who left home when I was 3.
5) I'm sorry for what I said last night. It was said in a moment of anger.
6) I felt a sudden surge of anger welling up inside me. I had to fight to control it.
7) Her comments provoked an uncharacteristic outburst of anger from the minister.
8) The cyclist shouted at the driver and shook his fist in anger.
9) From behind the door I could hear voices raised in anger.
10) He looked straight at me and his dark eyes blazed with anger.
11) When my son doesn't get his way, he stamps his feet in anger.
12) Psychologists say that it is better to express your anger rather than let it fester inside you.
13) Don't take your anger out on me, I had nothing to do with it!
14) Let us make sure that we do not direct our anger and frustration on to people who are only trying to help us
15) I felt guilty that I had shown my anger and frustration.

Thank you for reading.

Hi friends,

Since grammar is important in every language, as English learners, we have to learn English grammar. As you see, I am busy with setting questions for practising collocations. I asked Setayesh to participate in setting questions for practising English grammar. She kindly accepted my request and posted her first questions that concern future tenses. Thank you very much Setayesh.

I hope you will enjoy spending some time on practising English skills in this thread. I'd appreciate it if you could join us in setting questions or answering to them.

I've lost my grammar!

Post by behnam »

Hi Setayesh,

Thank you very much for your wonderful questions. I am hopeless at grammar. I am terrible at memorizing grammatical points. That's why I often learn English grammar through focusing on the meaning of sentences and their grammatical structures. In many cases, I am wrong, but in some cases it works.

I use my strategy to answer your grammatical sentences. I am not sure about the answers. I just have a try. Please correct my mistakes.

1) By the time I'm 20, I will have been studying English for 10 years.
2) This time next week I will be sitting on a plane to New York.
3) Will you see David this evening? "No, I won't have time".
4) Have you got any plans for when you leave school? Yes I'm going to take a gap year. I've applied for a job in Kenya.
5) What time are you meeting Liam this evening? "At eight outside the Town hall".
6) Can't you take Saturday off? By then you'll have been working for ten days without a break.
7) Don't ring at 8 o'clock. I will be watching/I am watching 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'.
8) In 5 years time I will finish university and I'll be able to earn some money at last.
9) The train to London is leaving/will be leaving at 6.13, so let's meet at the station at 6 o'clock.
10) As soon as I save enough money, I am going to buy you a laptop.
11) By the time we got to the party, most people will have gone home.
12) Louis won't be at school tomorrow because he is taking part/will be taking part in a swimming tournament.
13) By the time she leaves music school, she will have been studying for12 years.

Dear Setayesh, please correct me If I am wrong. By the way, please give your reason(mention to the grammatical rules) in case you correct me. Thank you in advance!

Re: Let's learn together!

Hi Behnam,
Thank you very much for answering to the questions. Your answers are correct but as you asked me to mention the grammatical points if needed I just rewrite some of them with some explanations.

************************************************************************************

3)Will you……(see) David this evening? “No, I won’t have time”
The answer can be in 2 forms:

-Will you see David this evening? "No, I won't have time"
-Will you be seeing David this evening? “No, I won’t have time”
(we can use future continuous to ask polite and less direct question about somebody’s plans)

**************************************************************************

7)Don’t ring at 8 o’clock. I………(watch) Who Wants to be a Millionaire
Don't ring at 8 o'clock. I will be watching/I am watching 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'. ( it’s much better to use will be watching because by this structure you talk about an action that will be in progress at specific point in the future e.g exactly at 8 O’clock as mentioned in above sentence )

***************************************************************************

8) In 5 years time I………..(finish) university and I’ll be able to earn some money at last.
In 5 years time I will have finished university and I’ll be able to earn some money at last. (because we are talking about a complete action or event in the future .)

********************************************************************************

9) The train to London ………….(leave) at 6.13, so let’s meet at the station at 6 o’clock.
The train to London leaves at 6.13, so let’s meet at the station at 6 o’clock. (To talk about things that are due to happen as part of a schedule present simple is preferred to use)

****************************************************************************************

10) As soon as I save enough money ,………..(buy) you a laptop.
As soon as I save enough money, I’ll buy you a laptop.
(As soon as works like IF in this sentence and it’s much better to use future simple here)

***************************************************************************************

I hope it would be useful for all.

Thanks Setayesh!

Hi Setayesh,

How are you? I hope you are great. Thank you very much for completing the sentences. Your English is excellent. Your answers are correct, but I've got different idea about two of them. Let's have a look at question 4 and 6!

First, let's consider question 4:

4) He has confidence . I've never known anyone so unsure of himself.

As it is clear, the first part is opposite of the second part. If he has confidence, why is he a symbol of unsureness to his friend? I think the correct answer is:
4) He lacks confidence . I've never known anyone so unsure of himself.

And question 6:
6)I like someone, but I lack confidence to go up to her and ask her out!

When someone lacks confidence, s/he has not got it in almost all situations. However, in this sentence, the person only has not got certain kind of confidence to ask a girl for going out. Therefore, I guess the correct answer is:
6)I like someone, but I haven't got the confidence confidence to go up to her and ask her out!

I am sure you know the answers and the grammatical points. I just wanted to give some explanation of my own choices to people who are following our questions and answers. In fact, many people-through emailing, calling , catting, etc.- have asked me to keep this method going. They have found this method really useful for practising English. I'd like to take this proper opportunity to thank you for participating and to all learners for following the posts. Actually, your emotional connection with us through reading our posts motivates us to continue and encourages us to try our best to keep the flame shining and the flag waving!

Thank you for reading.

Hi Behnam,

Thousands innocent people are being murdered in Gaza by a terrorist regime of Israel . They Israel soldiers are attacking children, women and civilian people in Gaza and killing them savagely by air fighter ,artillery and shelling . They have called it war , killing undefended people . They are very rude ,because many western countries are supporting Israel , some governments like USA , UK, France are supporting Israel to kill as many as children and women in Gaza. Wolves in sheep dress, what is all people of the world know it. Sometime you see reports in western press about animals , they are worry about animal life. ( e.g some whales have stuck in the beach and lost their lives ) It is absurd to see in western press these subjects , why the criminals are worry for animals , but if thousands of people are murdered in Gaza and they are not worry. Because there is no benefit for them , only what has benefit for them is important ,otherwise they easily kill millions of whales

Hi Mohsen!

Post by behnam »

Hi Mohsen,

Unfortunately, that is a bitter disappointment to the world. Innocent people; women and children are killed. I am really sad about what happening in Gaza. However, dear Mohsen, let's keep this thread only for practising English and improving our skills. Have you forgotten the bitter experience we had on 'WWW.English-at-home'? After 4 years running a long thread with a lot friends from all over the world, political and religious issues caused us to leave that place. }:

Dear Mohsen, I hope you will get what I mean. We have accepted to avoid discussing heated topics. Let's follow the rules if we care about having a nice place to be in; to spend some good on writing, reading, and imagining the friends faces.

Why don't you join us in making some questions and answering to them? Please participate actively. The number of views from this thread increases dramatically these days. We are going to have a very successful thread again. We will be effective in spreading love and kindness through practising English for peaceful purposes. You know why? WE will communicate effectively in English, because we are learning English. We will talk with people in all over the world in public places such as Facebook, etc. We will let the world know we are a peace-loving nation and will avoid war at all costs.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Behnam,

How are you?

Thanks for your reply and your wishes... I am really happy to see your words!

I am sorry for being absent for a long time. As you know, I am trying a new life now and dealing with different mind! It's hard for me to focus on a lot of things at the same time and being here! :-(

My new life has got a lot of good things and I am happy with it, I spent a great Eid and a lot of memorable days!
Of course, as everything, it has its ups and downs due to the differences between us.. However, I am trying my best to make things go well.

Please pray for me, I really need it.

Love you!

*Alway remeber that you are in my heart in thoughts!
