Difference between phrases and clauses

Do you know what is the difference between phrases and clauses and how use them in the sentences?

A phrase can be any few words, like these:
- red socks
- in my pocket
- ups and downs of life
- phrases and clauses

A clause on the other hand needs a subject and a predicate (verb etc), for example:
- who lives upstairs
- when it rang
- I like coffee
