The word "Companies" (plural) in a company name

Post by astra »

Take this company name for example:

The Cumberland Companies LLC
https://www.thecumberlandcompanies.com/

Why is the word "Companies" in plural, considering that it's just one company?

Could it be that the plural is used for artistic reasons, because it sounds better, and if so, is this still proper English?

It seems to be because it is a group of companies as described on their website, for example:
http://www.tidytots.com/, http://stores.theshavewellcompany.com/ and http://www.tidy-care.com/.

Yes, a group of companies would make sense. However, according to the description those are brands. Perhaps it's a group of brands representing individual undertakings and the group of undertakings is informally referred to as "Companies". That wouldn't be unreasonable, considering that it also sounds good.
