I agree that these words have essentially the same meaning, but there is a subtle difference I think. Anyone can be a writer (just look at me), but "authors" suggests, at least to me, that they have had something published in the public realm under their own name on a professional basis.what is the difference between the two words?

We talk (a little) more about author when we talk about a book. Victor Hugo is the author of Les Misérables, for example.
We use more the word "writer" when we talk about one person, what she is. Victor Hugo is a famous writer in the french literature.
We don't say "Victor was the writer of Les Misérables".
I don't say "Victor was a famous author in the english literature".
When you use "author", you think about the relation with the book.
When you use "writer", you think about the person and its context, its life.

So I would say "Zuozhe" in Chinese for author, whereas "Zuojia" for writer in above stiuation.When you use "author", you think about the relation with the book.
